It’s pretty safe to say that Game of Thrones hasn’t been exactly heralded for empowering sex scenes. In the space of one season, we saw not one, but two rape scenes - and one of those was also incest. After Sansa and Cersei were attacked, their characters suddenly bolstered up and became crazy confident, leading fans to call out the writers for minimising the devastating effects of rape.
Yep, being a feminist and a Game of Thrones fan often comes with ‘Er, that bit made me shudder’ moments, and even some trepidation going into Season 7 as to what horrific scene awaits us next. However, last night’s episode caused feminist viewers around the globe to uniformly heave a sigh of relief, because we finally got to see some authentic female pleasure that wasn’t from a prostitute.
At last, two key members of Daenerys’ entourage gave in to their urges after an entire season of bashful gazing and naked bathing, and everyone is so here for it. Missandei, played by Nathalie Emmanuel (who chatted about the show's kickass female cast with our beauty editor) and Jacob Anderson’s Grey Worm finally indulged in a sex scene centered around consent, empowerment, and acceptance, in what just might be their last ever night together.
The catch? Grey Worm is a eunuch, which is where things might get tricky - but Missandei gently coaxes him into letting her see his bits (or lack thereof) before he goes down south. Trust us, our description doesn’t do it justice; it’s actually super sweet and tender.
