The Bake-Off Showstoppers Were Incred, But How Did They Measure Up Against Other Seasons?

The Bake-Off Showstoppers Were Incred, But How Did They Measure Up Against Other Seasons?
Mark Bourdillon/Channel 4

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, this is your PSA that the Great British Bake Off is officially back. This new season’s a bit of a shake up with all the Channel 4 vs. BBC drama, actual adverts and - well - new presenter Noel Fielding, but one thing remains the same: the bakes are unbelievable. Last night’s episode was a great start to the season and everyone’s been buzzing about the showstopper round, which had everything from ramen to bread illusion-cakes.

Watch this cute little Bake-Off Twitter video for a taste of what went down in episode one.

Bread Cake - Peter

This is a chocolate cake. Someone’s putting their art GCSE to good use.

Channel 4

Watermelon Cake - Flo

We want our parents to be as proud of us as Flo is of her cake.

Banana-ramen - Yan

How did this not win? Yan made fake salmon roe.

Channel 4

Black Evening Clutch - Stacey

Well it’s not Balenciaga, but it’s not too bad.

Channel 4

Russian Doll Cake - Julia

We wonder what Putin would have to say about this.

Channel 4

Champagne Bottle and Bucket - Sophie

Call the girls, it’s time for brunch. Those ice cubes were next level.

How did they measure up to the showstoppers of previous series’ though? Here’s a recap of the most jaw-dropping GBBO cakes ever.

Series 6, Nadiya’s floating drinks can

Nadiya!! (She’s still one of our favourites.) She was a solid competitor all the way through, but this floating cheesecake creation was just next level.

BBC

Series 6, Tamal’s Chinese Fishing Village

While we’re not completely seeing the fishing village here, there’s no denying that this cake was truly showstopping.

BBC

Series 6, Paul’s Lion Bread

We’re still shook over this one. That little face! The detailing! Even Paul couldn’t help but freak out.

BBC

Series 5, Nancy’s Moulin Rouge cake

Nancy took home the title of Star Baker a couple of times this season, but she gave us major Parisian vibes with this Moulin Rouge cake. (Ewan McGregor, eat your heart out.)

BBC

Series 4, Beca’s Spiced Butternut Squash Cake

This cake never fails to put a smile on our faces, even if we’re not sure about spiced butternut squash.

BBC

Series 4, Frances’ Giant Matchsticks

Frances’ creations always threw us for a loop, whether she was putting together little vegetable canapes or making these massive Giant Matchsticks.

BBC

Series 3, Blackbird Pie Cake - Victoria

Sure, it’s a little morbid but this Blackbird Pie Cake was incredible. It’s hard to believe this was episode one.

BBC

We'll just be over here with our pre-made brownie mix, thank you very much. We can't wait to see what else the new season holds - more marigolds for Noel Fielding, please.
