1. Be horrified by season seven of American Horror Story: Cult
Ryan Murphy, the man who brought us Nip/Tuck, Glee and Scream Queens is back with the seventh season of his terrifyingly good anthology American Horror Story. The show, which has had both Lady Gaga and drag queen Trixie Mattel grace its screen, this season opens in the US on election night with show regular Sarah Paulson’s character at the TV as it is announced that Trump has been elected president. And what could be more frightening than that?
2. Scoff Kawaii cakes at the Hello Kitty Pop Up Café
Hello Kitty shaped food is not even vaguely unusual to seasoned Japan travellers, but it’s not every day that you get to eat food inspired by the most adorable of moggies. Popping up from September 1st at the Fitzrovia branch of London's Japanese café and matcha bar Tombo for six weeks, there’ll be poké, cupcakes and ice cream on offer. Oishii, indeed.
3. Be fabulous at Fashion Together
There’s no stopping SHOWstudio editor Lou Stoppard; following the announcement that ‘North: Identity, Photography, Fashion’ – a show she co-curated with Manchester based academic Adam Murray – is set to travel south to Somerset House this autumn, comes news of another exhibition. ‘Fashion Together’ looks set to shine the spotlight on some of fashion's most iconic duos as she explores the work of Nick Knight and Daphne Guinness, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren, and Thom Browne and Stephen Jones.
4. Be awed by Basquiat: Boom for Real
Opening this September at the brilliant Barbican Centre is the first large scale exhibition of one of the most significant painters of the 20th century, US artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988). Featuring over 100 of his works that have been shown on this side of the pond, the show looks set to highlight the self-taught artist’s breathtakingly diverse source material – from bebop jazz to silent film.
5. Take in the air – and dance the night away – at By the Sea Festival
With the Turner Contemporary and magical looking shell grotto Margate is quite possibly Britain’s coolest seaside resort. And at the end of the month it's going to get even better as The Libertines, Everything Everything and Metronomy all pitch up to Dreamland theme park for By The Sea festival. Now in its third year, it combines all the usual festival frivolity with rollercoasters, and we don’t know what could be more fun than that.
6. Go back to (stylish) school on Regent St
September is one of the most stylish months in the calendar as the capital celebrates design and fashion and in honour of that fact Regent Street is bringing back its Fashion & Design Month: a free, month-long programme of events, talks and activities. Some of the street’s plushest venues will play host to some of London’s brightest talent as the likes of Sam McKnight, and Bella Freud dispense wisdom as part of the Speaker Series. Meanwhile shoppers will be able to get more hands-on at Uniqlo’s wool workshop, or be illustrated by Jo Bird and Willa Gebbie who’ll be roaming the street looking for the best dressed shoppers to sketch.
7. Buy local at the Rixo Pop Up
Popping up in Soho this September is independent fashion brand Rixo. Founded by London College of Fashion graduates Henrietta Rix and Orlagh McClorey the label was born out of their mutual love of all things vintage. To keep each of their beautiful, silk ‘70s inspired dresses, blouses and skirts as unique as possible, no piece is mass-produced, and every print is painted – using every colour in the crayon box – by hand in their London studio.
8. Bask in colour at the V&A’s reflection room
As part of London Design Festival, for two weeks this month the V&A’s Prince Consort room is set to be transformed into an immersive coloured light experience. Using special, gloss black stretchy panels around the room, which have been woven with LED lights that emit orange and blue hues, the space will become a textile of the future. And the best bit? It’s totally free. Expect to see it on an Insta feed near you.
9. Sit FROW at London Fashion Week Festival
Ticket to the Burberry show get lost in the post? No matter, The British Fashion Council have like benevolent demi-gods that they are have bestowed upon us a week long festival at LFW venue The Store Studios. There’ll be catwalk shows, shopping and talks from the likes of sequin master ASHISH and design duo Fyodor Golan. Basically, all the good stuff.
10. Feel all kinds of wonderful listening to The Killers’ new album
It’s their first album in five years, and Wonderful Wonderful from the Nevadan rock band shows all the signs of being worth the wait. The lead single ‘The Man’ was Annie Mac’s hottest track and revealed that the have lost none of their foot-tappingly good sound. But more importantly, the video showed lead singer Brandon Flowers sporting a gold and silver rhinestoned jacket. Oh, and if you’re wondering whether he is as handsome as he was, he very much is.
