The Best Moments From London Fashion Weeks Gone By

For me, the marriage of sport and fashion for Stella McCartney’s SS09 Adidas collection was brilliant. The presentation was made up of treadmills, trampolines and tennis courts, and some of the models were Olympic athletes including Beth Tweddle. The fluid movement of the models, teamed with the dynamic outfits, was a joy to capture on camera. It was exciting to see fashion being presented in an environment that wasn’t a catwalk.

This image shows models lining up backstage at the Julien Macdonald show during LFW SS15. We were at the Royal Opera House, and it was exciting to shoot in such an iconic venue. By altering this image to become black and white, it gives the image a classic, decadent feel, tying in with the style of the building. 

I love shooting Lady Gaga - you never know what she’ll pull out of the bag next. Here she is with Philip Treacy in the front row at his SS13 show, at The Royal Courts of Justice. It was impossible to miss Gaga in this hat, and I love how nonchalant she appears, especially given this particular creation can’t have been that comfortable to wear. Nevertheless, she pulls it off brilliantly, and stole the show on the FROW. 

Sometimes at LFW, the FROW gives the catwalk a run for its money when it comes to stealing people’s attention. Shots like these are one of the reasons I love shooting Fashion Week, as it captures those attending in a candid moment, just enjoying themselves. Pam Hogg is renowned for her extremely creative designs, and enigmatic catwalk shows – this SS13 show was no exception and was particularly futuristic. I love how these models mirror each other beautifully, even down to their steps which couldn’t have been easy in those platforms.

This here is Sergio the Shoe Hunter, with a GoPro attached to his harness outside the Matthew Williamson show during SS15. It’s a great image to reiterate that fashion these days can come in all shapes and sizes, and indeed species. I like this because it just shows how far fashion has come, and how there is constantly an opportunity to capture it from a new angle. Who’d have thought we’d ever see Fashion Week through the eyes of a dachshund?

I’m constantly playing around with new ideas and trying new angles. This is one of my alternative style images I took of Peaches Geldof at the Temperley London show during FW13/14. She arrived at The Dorchester Hotel to a horde of photographers and I walked around to the side so I could capture this shot. I love it because the blurred background gives the impression that although it was quite chaotic, she remains serene with all eyes on her. 

I think to a lot of people Vivienne Westwood is an enigma. That’s why I’m really pleased I was able to capture a candid shot like this, showing her eating take-away lunch just like the rest of us. This was taken backstage before her Red Label Fashion Show in September 2009. Even eating in a dressing room, she’s still a legend.

I took this at the Alexander McQueen show during the London Collections: MEN SS14. We were at The Coal Drops in Kings Cross, the perfect spot for a theatrical show which McQueen was renowned for putting on. I like how this shot looks as though the model has emerged from the fog behind, it’s almost ghostly.

This is Mario Testino with Kate Moss at the Burberry Prorsum show during FW15/16. I have shot for Burberry for many years and it’s moments like these, where you capture two of the most iconic figures in fashion just being two old friends, attending a fashion show and genuinely enjoying themselves, that make this key moment stand out. Everyone around them is photographing them, trying to take selfies but they are oblivious to their surroundings.
