Purple Haze

If there's one gal who'll be road-testing the trends, it'll be the daring Agyness Deyn. Her flamboyant purple was slicked on perfectly and showing no modesty - this is fashion-forward beauty at its best. While this could be a difficult intensity of colour to pull off, if you're feeling the purple power go for it!

Rihanna's paint-box make-up is brilliantly modern. A smear of matte indigo purple is best worn boldly across the whole eyelid. While there is barely any eyeliner on her top lid, you can bring a darker shade down and around the bottom lash for some eye-definition. Don't be afraid to match eyes with clothes as Rihanna boldly has but keep lips soft to avoid colour overload. 

There was full-impact purple drama on the Dior runways this spring so it's time to shake up your colour palettes and experiment with the power of purple. You can try beautiful, creative shading like this model (if you fancy the Grace Jones vibe) or simple accents of plum pencil smudged in around the eyes. Wearing purple lips and eyes together may seem adventurous so if you go for shaded eyes, try a glistening gloss for lips. 

Mariah Carey is one of the loyal devotees of make-up artist Laura Mercier, so who better to talk us through the singer's trend-coloured lids than the beauty guru herself.

"If you have beautiful brown eyes like Mariah, this season's lilacs, peaches and pink tones are perfect for you. The simplest eye make-up is a sheer application of one colour that's like a veil for the eyelid. Use an eyeshadow brush and apply a thin layer of product from lash line to brow bone. Wear it alone with liner and mascara."

It's great to see that January Jones opted for a metallic purple haze for the Annual Producer's Guild Awards. A silvery, molten purple is more vibrant than a pastel sort and works perfectly with blonde hair and grey gowns like January.

To get this look rim the upper and lower lash line with a black pencil and then layer the shadow on your eyelid and a little under the lower lash line. Smudge the colours as close to the lash line as possible so it looks modern and chic. Layer up the black kohl and mauve shadows for an edgy look that's perfect to party in.

Kate Hudson sharpened her beauty focus and swept a shimmery lilac over eyelids to create a cute and not overly-trendy look, especially as she kept the rest of her make-up subtle. This is a great way to tick the trend and more importantly give you a fresh look for spring.

Try this yourself by applying a pastel shade across the whole lid and then a slightly deeper violet into the natural crease on the outside corner of the eyelid. Finish with a double dose of mascara.

Katie Holmes may not experiment wildly with beauty trends but when she dips into one, she does so with sophistication and style. Seen here for the film premiere of Hairspray, she wore a lovely mauve over her eyes to lift her little black dress - an easy route to red carpet beauty.

Lady GaGa follows no rules and is definitely no shrinking violet as she took on lilac literally from head to toe here. Her lips were a perfect catwalk copy of Todd Lynn runways - if not more intensified. Val Garland, who was the make-up artistry brains behind the Todd Lynn look, teamed lilac lips with thin black eyebrows which worked perfectly with the light grey and black clothes sent down the runways.

Ashanti has popped her eyes with sparkling violets but rimmed inner and outer lashes with black for an edgier slant. The party lashes fluttering from the sides mean the singer is ready to hit the dance floor.
