Metallic Eyes

As expected, Kate Moss took the metallic trend and added her own Moss magic to it. For The Model as Muse Met Institute Costume Gala she went all-out with dramatic winged smoky shadow and metallic shimmer laying on top.

Chanel make-up artist Kay Montano, says this fantastic look throws back to yesteryear: "It pays homage to the decadent part of Seventies and was a popular look worn by Jerry Hall and Brooke Shields - the icons of this winged eyes look." Kay explains how the thick black liner, top and bottom, gives that wicked rock and roll look. "Apply liner inside and out, after your eyeshadow, and smudge it to get that edginess."

The rustic bronze smouldering out of Charlize's eyes is straight off this season's Oscar de la Renta catwalks and a big beauty thumbs-up for summer. Softer than the heavily gilded eyes of past seasons, this luminous haze is exactly like a cloud of coppery hues melting around the eyes. Add champagne lipstick or creamy coloured gloss to complete the look.

Blondes and silvery eye-lights are a perfect match as supermodel Gisele proved. Relaxed waves and silver rimmed eyes were the looks on Giorgio Armani catwalks and but Gisele skipped the over-sculptured cheeks and opted for a more casual dewy glow. It's one of this season's most wearable looks and beats boring black.

Rihanna softened her look for the Pre-Grammy Gala by throwing a pretty wash of bronze over eyelids and cheeks. It's a Eighties trick to take shadow from the inner eye to the outer eye but by keeping to one shade as Rihanna did, you maintain a modern look.

Darker skins look brilliant with gold-infused browns on lids and tawny coloured cheeks like Frieda as it really warms the face. The best way to achieve this rust-toned look is by layering up metallic eye-shadow onto concealer-dabbed lids and blend a darker shade lightly into the sockets. There are no harsh lines with this golden look so keep blending until you get the desired effect.

Sassy songstress Katy Perry is not one to shy away from bold make-up and she cranked up the metallic mix for The Model as Muse Met Costume Institute Gala. To match her gold neck piece, she merged sunshine metallic yellow into chocolate-filled sockets and added perfectly shaped brows to finish the look.

Rosario Dawson gave a nod to the metallic trend by highlighting eyelids with a soft gold and defining the outer edges with a deeper brown. This is a classic look made modern by choosing light-reflecting eyeshadows that bring the eye area to life. Brown eyeliner, rather than black, smudged into the corners softens the look and prettifies her cat-like eyes.

Russian beauty Natasha Poly silver lined her eyes in perfect Gucci style in Cannes. According to make-up authority Lisa Eldridge, "anyone can pull off silver" whether you wash your lids with the colour or go for a graphic streak. Eldridge advises to "add a sheen to skin" so reach for glow-giving foundation or tinted moisturiser.
