Guillermo Del Toro’s fantasy epic The Shape of Water leads the nominations for this year's Bafta film awards. At a Bafta press conference this morning, it was revealed that the fantasy romance is nominated for twelve Bafta awards including best film and best director, as well as a best actress for Sally Hawkins and best supporting actress for Octavia Spencer. The film recently won a Golden Globe for Best Score.
Darkest Hour and Three Billboards each received nine nominations, including best film and outstanding British film. There was also recognition for a number of British films including Christopher Nolan’s war epic Dunkirk which received eight nominations, Paddington 2 which received three alongside Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool and Armando Iannucci’s dark Soviet satire The Death of Stalin.
The nominations come days after Brit actors Daniel Kaluuya, Josh O’Connor and Florence Pugh made the shortlist for the EE Rising Star award, whose previous winners include Tom Hardy and John Boyega.
The nominations which were announced by Natalie Dormer and Letitia Wright at BAFTA’s London headquarters also revealed that this year's ceremony will be hosted by Joanna Lumley. She replaces Stephen Fry and will be the first female host since Mariella Frostrup co-presented with Fry in 2001.
