The Oscars Best Leading Actor Favourite: Gary Oldman, The Darkest Hour
Joe Wright, who directed Atonement, is back with another big British film set to make award waves. Starring Gary Oldman as you have never seen him before as Winston Churchill, The Darkest Hour traces Churchill’s most difficult days as he negotiates the removal of the armed forces from Dunkirk. Oldman achieves the impossible here by both humanizing an icon and making him seem even more larger than life than ever before. Lily James also co-stars as his secretary and puts in such a charming performance she may get herself a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Academy Awards.

This horror movie created quite the buzz when it hit cinemas this summer. Get Out tells the tale of a young African American man who meets his white girlfriend’s parents for a weekend at their secluded estate. Naturally, like many horror movies before it, it's set in secluded woods and, before long, the friendly and polite exteriors of the family slips away to nightmare-worthy scenes. It has been a while since a horror movie has caught the Academy’s attention but Get Out’s treatment of a rather tired genre is more than noteworthy.

Saoirse Ronan practically has the Golden Globe for Best Leading Actress in a Comedy or Musical in her hands already, as she lights up the screen in Greta Gerwig’s directing debut, Lady Bird. The queen of zero f**ks given dressing, Frances McDormand plays a mother who challenges the local authorites to solve her daughter’s murder. This dark comedy drama will rip out your insides and make them ache with laughter at the same time.
Victoria and Abdul: Judi Dench Is A Best Actress Contender
Judi Dench reprises her role of Queen Victoria in the director of The Queen’s latest movie. Here, Queen Victoria strikes up a unlikely friendship with a young Indian servant, Abdul Karim played by Bollywood’s Ali Fazel. There is nothing quite like this Dame playing a Queen, which she did so well when she stormed to a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Shakespeare In Love despite her portrayal of Elizabeth I lasting a matter of minutes.
Jennifer Lawrence Could Win 2nd Oscar For Mother!
Mother received mixed reviews when it opened in the box office this summer with some calling the Black Swan’s Director, Darren Aronofsky’s, cinematic return more than a little troubling. However one thing that is universally acknowledged is the depths Jennifer Lawrence traveled to in order to play a woman whose tranquil house is disturbed by a number of questionable visitors. Battle of The Sexes: Could Emma Stone Get A Back-To-Back Win?
Emma Stone could make it two Oscars in a row for her portrayal of tennis player, Billie Jean King. It helps that the feminist subject matter in Battle of The Sexes feels very off the moment despite the film tracing the tennis legend’s 1973 infamous tennis match with former tramp and serial hustler, Bobby Riggs.
