Winter Is 100% Coming, Says Game Of Thrones Star Nathalie Emmanuel
Nathalie Emmanuel Interview

We grilled the Game of Thrones star on her fitness routine, revealing costumes, Missandei’s friendship with Daenerys, and that whole winter thing…

Nathalie Emmanuel can keep a secret. Fifteen minutes into our interview, we’ve discussed her collaboration with Speedo on their #Make1KWet challenge to encourage people to try to swim a kilometre for every 5k run or 10k cycled, she’s told me about how she overcame her fear of the water, and we’ve gushed over the yummy muffins that are perched on the table near us.

The elephant in the room? Game of Thrones season 7. I want to know what’s going to happen, who’s kissing whom, whether she shares spoilers with her friends, and, well, EVERYTHING. But Nathalie is well-versed in dealing with Thrones fanatics (aka, me), and weighs up her words carefully before answering, carefully not to let too much slip. But she did drop a mighty bomb about that old winter thing…

On the pressure of staying in shape…

‘I used to dance and run and have a general desire to be healthy and to take care of myself, so I’ve never been too concerned about the perceived pressure of looking a certain way. I’m also really lucky that my costumes on Game of Thrones have been designed to compliment my body - and that our costume designer, Michele Clapton, is more than willing to work with us on anything we don’t feel comfortable wearing.’

On conquering her fear of swimming…

‘When I was younger, someone jumped on top of me in a pool. After that, I’d swim, but I didn’t go out of my depth - I always wanted my feet to be able to touch the floor. I made a film last year where I had to swim and sit at the bottom of a swimming pool and it brought up a lot of the anxiety, so it took about 4 weeks of lessons in how to use the diving equipment for me to feel comfortable underwater. When Speedo approached me to front their #Make1KWet challenge, I thought of it as an opportunity to improve my swimming and build my confidence further.'

On the benefits of staying fit…

‘Physical activity is so good for your self esteem - you carry it with you. Since taking on the challenge to swim more, I’ve noticed I’ve worked muscles I didn’t know I had, even though I also practice yoga and love running.’

On the next season of Game of Thrones…

‘I’m excited about this season because a lot of the momentum we’ve been building with this winter that is coming, or has been coming for a long time, kicks into gear now. And there’s a continuation of characters who haven’t previously interacted coming together, which is always exciting to watch.’

On the show’s strong women…

‘Game of Thrones write very complex characters so well - I love that you see real strength in the characters who are in a less powerful position and who’ve been oppressed, and weakness or vulnerability in the strong characters. The women really exemplify this as they are such a force to be reckoned with. Take Missandei - she’s been a slave her whole live and is incredibly intelligent and uses that for the greater good. She and Daenerys have that in common; Daenerys was sold in a sense for the advancement of men, so they have that solidarity in having both been used but emerging stronger.’

On Missandei and Grey Worm’s relationship…

‘They’re such a great couple because there’s a purity about their connection. It’s been born of a place of pain and confusion and oppression, so they understand one another. It’s very human, and yet very rare. In that world of people being butchered and battered and manipulated, there’s this very pure, very sweet thing. It’s special.’
