Seasoned runner: Naomi Watts jogging in New York

It’s not about wearing any old trainers to work out in now. Gone are the days of the Dunlop Green Flash or the school plimsole. Technology and performance are what it's all about, oh and lots of funky colour combinations.

The right trainer is imperative not only for comfort, (we don’t mind suffering for high heels, but who wants blisters from their trainers?) but also to prevent injury and push your fitness to the next level.

As a regular runner I have tried and tested a few brands over the years and have found my favourite that works best for me. But they are not pretty. Being fashion obsessive, I also had to get over the fact that some of them are down right ugly too.

Keep an eye on how many miles you're clocking up as trainers tend to wear out and lose their effectivness and will need replacing every 500 miles.

Here are the top 5 best trainers available right now to get you to that 5k and beyond. There is nothing more motivating (apart from bikini season being right around the corner) than new exercise gear to get you pounding the pavement.

Happy running.
