Months after Alexa Chung declared the choker ‘dead’, the nineties neck accoutrement is still everywhere.
We know, it’s not exactly synonymous with effortless cool, but Kendall Jenner and that gang of genetically blessed Insta-queens seem to have have bought everyone round to the idea.
So — why the hype? The choker had its heyday in the 90s and, as with many trends from that era, they’re having a cool comeback.
At fashion week, it was part of the standard model-outside-shows uniform and we even spotted it on some street style names proving it’s not — as we once thought — just a teenybopper trend.
They can kind of be worn with anything, as we saw on the AW16 catwalks at Lanvin, Valentino (see below) and Gucci, where collars were teamed with lace, ruffles and sequin suits. If you're not on for the current catwalk club aesthetic, avoid black chokers and go for more of a cool Scandi vibe with a minimal gold design.
Chokers are making an appearance on the party circuit too, with Karlie Kloss, Emily Ratajkowski and Jourdan Dunn adorning their necks to match their gowns.
