Sarah Jessica Parker Breaks A Cardinal Fashion Rule (But Totally Pulls It Off)

Sarah Jessica Parker’s latest look shouldn’t work, but somehow she manages to make it look chic. Proof that this woman really can wear everything…

Sarah Jessica Parker has always been a bit of a fashion rule breaker. From styling up pretty ball gowns with thigh-high leather boots, to working unexpected colour combos that others wouldn’t dream of pairing together, if she likes it, she’ll wear it. End of story. And we love her for it.

Of course, her latest look is no exception. Launching her latest range of heels from her SJP Collection to a frenzy of die-hard fans at Bloomingdale's in New York City, the 50-year-old fashion icon and Sex and the City star looked amazing in a chic black, a-line dress in a jacquard finish, which she paired with glittering midi heels from her own range.

While it goes without saying that her ensemble was pretty, it definitely lacked the SJP outfit theatrics we know and love. I mean, where’s her Chanel bum bag? Or statement Marni necklace? Has Sarah lost her knack for styling up stand out accessories?!

As turns out, she has not…

It wasn’t until we clocked this post on SJP’s personal Instagram account that we realised her outfit was way edgier than we gave her credit for.

The post shows SJP’s husband Matthew Broderick zipping up her dress before she leaves for the event. However, instead of hiding her bra underneath her dress, she’s chosen to make it a key feature of her look by deliberately showing off its ornate straps with her scoop-back dress.

We don’t need to tell you that showing your bra from underneath your clothes has become a fashion faux pas (soz Sporty Spice, circa 1997), but SJP manages to pull off the tricky look with ease.

Feeling inspired? Here’s SJP’s chic girl’s guide to showing off your bra, without looking cheap:

1. Blend your bra shade to the colour of your dress. A hot pink frock with green bra straps? A BIG no-no.

2. Look for pretty straps, and think of new ways to show them off. Try styling lacy or ruched straps with an off the shoulder top or make the most of a low-cute back by working an unexpected halter neck style, just like Sarah.

3. Keep the rest of your outfit super-sophisticated. Hemlines should be long (or trousers if you prefer) and the neckline demure.

SJP, you never cease to amaze us…
