In a fitting tribute to her late brother, Gianni Versace, Donatella marked the twentieth anniversary of his death by bringing back the most iconic supermodels EVER for the most jaw-dropping spectacle at Milan Fashion Week thus far.
Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell joined Donatella for the finale of the Versace show by sashaying down the runway to the iconic George Michael track, Freedom!
Wearing metallic floor length gowns all with slight twists – a split hem here and a asymmetric detail there – Versace showed you don’t have to fashion a model into a walking, talking botanical garden or such, to make the most effective statement.
With Cindy Crawford’s daughter, Kaia Gerber making waves on the runway during her debut season, Cindy showed just where Kia got her swagger from – some people are just born with it, clearly. Of course the new generation of super models put in a stomping appearance too with Gigi Hadid charging down the runway with her partner in crime, Binx in embellished thigh high boots and two varying takes on the iconic Versace black mini dress with plunging necklines.
The iconography didn’t stop there with the iconic gold Versace print appearing across everything from boxy two-pieces to not so mumble headscarves. Naturally it wouldn’t be a Versace show without a heavy helping of Medusa. Bella’s heavy-duty chain necklace for instance would be heavy enough to sink a battleship – such was the weight of the occasion.
In a surprise turn to many the former First Lady of France, Carla Bruni made a sensational return to the runway to celebrate the life of her dear friend, Gianni Versace who was murdered on the streets of Milan twenty years ago.
It is safe to say this moment – five iconic women joined by an equally iconic designer simply taking a bow without any excessive thrills and spills- will be spoken about for years to come and it just goes to show somethings never go out of fashion…
