Polka dots. Let’s face it, when it comes to summer fashion, they’re like Marmite. For me up until recently I struggled to eradicate the connotations they conjure up of buxom school teachers handing out June exam papers or a certain type of girl that Instagrams motivational quotes from Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. That was until a certain ruffled dress in spotted white and rust started essentially spamming my feed from a number of influencers I follow. One tap later and I found myself lost down the Insta hole of Realisation Par, a Californian brand that in a flurry of flirty dress styles is blasting the basic out of polka dots. The aforementioned ‘Valentina’ with its cap sleeves, ruffled neckline and hem plus waisted wrap screams afternoon summer Rosé date, while the ‘Alexandra,’ is of a similar style but with full length sleeves and slightly lower hemline if you want something a bit safer for work. Thankfully, they ship internationally so you can get your playful fix usually within a week.
Closer to home, & Other Stories have a red frilled skirt with miniature spots that is also quickly garnering likes on Insta. At £45, it’s perfect if you’re crush on dots is only going to last as long as your summer fling. Just pair it with a slogan tee and a pair of sliders and you’ll be ticking off three summer trends in one. Speaking of trends, this season, designers also put a more grown up spin on spots with Louis Vuitton featuring giant monochromatic prints on jackets and dresses often fusing with a chequered print too. Gucci peppered tropical-pink polka dots all over a mid length ruffled dress while the Calvin Klein Resort Collection, included several silk dresses featuring a mixture of polka dots varying in size. If you’re still sceptical about integrating the print into your wardrobe, start with accessories as a first step. Tabitha Simmons sliders in navy with a twisted front strap give a subtle nod to the trend while you can’t go wrong with a printed scarf like the below one from Saint Laurent.
