Why #WeWearWhatWeWant Is The Body Positive Hashtag Curve Girls Need RN

How one model’s body positive hashtag is taking over social media

Keep your stomach hidden. You shouldn’t wear loud prints. Horizontal stripes are nobody’s friend, and leave the crop tops to girls with flat stomachs. The ‘rules’ for what plus-size and curvy women should and shouldn’t wear are endless, but when it comes down to it, they’re all complete and utter rubbish (to put it politely).

After seeing yet another story of a woman shamed for her size and outfit on social media, body positive model Simone Mariposa is taking a stand with #WeWearWhatWeWant, a Twitter hashtag that aims to show off plus-size women in socially ‘unacceptable’ outfits (in Simone’s own words). Check her mission statement below.

The hashtag has gone viral across social media, with thousands of women (and men!) sharing pictures of themselves in outfits that make them feel great. We’re talking short skirts, bikinis, bodycon dresses, cut-out tops and even plain old underwear, because a plus-size woman has every right to wear whatever she wants – WITHOUT being shamed.

The 23-year-old from California has suffered from body image issues in the past, telling Buzzfeed that she kept her arms and legs covered up, and stayed away from clothes that accentuated her belly fat. Now? Simone has ‘stopped letting society dictate my wardrobe, and started wearing things that I always dreamed of wearing’. Through #WeWearWhatWeWant, Simone hopes to ‘lead by example’ and get plus-size women loving their bodies again (if they don't already).
