If you’re not one for flouncy frocks or boho-cool maxi-gowns, then we’ve got a chic little alternative for you this party season: the tuxedo (or le smoking if you want to use its fashion term).
Stylish celebrities including Leighton Meester, Olivia Wilde and Winona Ryder have been spotted on the red carpet in a variety of menswear, from a peg-legged suit and tie combo (worn by Leighton) to lapelled tuxes (Olivia and Winona). Don’t they look smart?
Menswear on women is not a new fashion phenomenon. Pioneered by silver screen actress Marlene Dietrich, debuted on the runway by the legendary Yves Saint Laurent and popularised by androgynous-chic actresses like Diane Keaton, suiting has long been an uber-elegant after-hours option.
If you’re working the look this holiday season, don’t forget to add a stand-out feminine detail, like a red lip, a pair of chandelier earrings or a statement clutch. And always, ALWAYS wear heels.
