Rose Byrne working the sheer top, black bra trend

Rose Byrne working the sheer top, black bra trend

Harking back to those teen days when you thought that kind of thing was ‘sexy’, the sheer-top-black-bra look is a tough trend to tackle. But, help is at hand with our guide to getting the visible underwear trend right.

Rose Byrne has been championing the look on the red carpet, from double lingerie at the Burberry London in LA show to her Altazarra catwalk look at the Adult Beginners premiere. Proof that bra flashing is anything but trashy.

It’s the ultimate overtly sexy look, so done right it’s a winner. It’s basically the date night look of the season; it has an A-list seal of approval, you’re not bra-less (a whole different kettle of fish) and it’s actually pretty chic.

As Rose proves, it’s all about the layering – and the bra. (So far, so obvious.) The dress or top silhoutte has got to be demure – think shirt dress or high-necked blouse – and the bra has to be opaque, preferably black and classic. No mesh triangles here, we mean a pretty balconette or something of the sort.

Even more unlikely, Cate Blanchett, the demure incarnate, has been flashing her black bra at Cannes Film Festival under a high-necked sheer Alexander McQueen dress.

Here's the three biggest ways to trial the trend...

This is the most statement style of sheer dress you can go for and being so, well, naked you can't get away with an ill-suited bra choice. Steer clear of overty sexy styles and opt for something with a fun back strap detailing, like this organic cotton Pima one, or go all out with a sporty Calvin Klein bralette.

2) The Sexy Sheer Shirt

The sheer shirt is a sexy option for a drinks party or date night, but keep the look chic with a pair of wide leg trousers and the right bra. We're loving L'Agent's Penelope balconette style as it gives support and shape without showing too much.

3) The Shirt Dress

This is the look Rose Byrne particularly nails; the demure shirt dress with an unexpected visible bra. This works best with low-key bras, without excess padding and detail, and here's how to choose the
