Rihanna is known for her flare for statement dressing - that pink tired Giambattista Valli dress, anyone? - but at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 2015 Costume Institute Benefit (AKA the Met Gala) she took her look to next level extremes with her very over the top but kind of brilliant dress which has already earned itself accolades in the form of beyond hilarious internet memes. Oh RiRi, what are you like?
Unlike so many others who wore scarlet red or shimmering dresses with little thought, the 27-year-old Bitch Better Have Money singer took the Chinese theme of last nights event - which honours the opening of this years Met fashion exhibition China: Through the Looking Glass - and REALLY stuck to it.
Rocking a bright yellow cape style dress with a colossal train, we can only imagine the strength it took drag that garb along the red carpet. Good thing she's got the leanest pins we've ever seen, huh?
Adorned with traditional oriental embroidery and finished with a Big Bird yellow trim and ornate headpiece (and a new bob hairstyle to boot), this is definitely a look that's worthy of the exhibition itself! Chatting to VS.com, Rihanna said of her look: “I’m so in love with this dress, but the train is insane! I can’t really walk in it without any help. But it’s so worth it. I love this dress so much! It’s Chinese couture and it’s made by Guo Pei. It’s handmade by one Chinese woman and it took her two years to make. I found it online.”
TWO YEARS?! Now that's what we call dedication, though we reckon it's pretty worth it when it ends up on the likes of Rihanna...
However, when you dare to wear a dress of that grandeur, you're always in line for a ceremonial internet taking down and Rihanna didn't go unscathed.
Taking to the Net, a host of people have pointed out the nifty memes that you can make from a frock of that magnitude and some of them are a hoot. Here's our pick of the most snigger-worthy:
With her dashing date
PIZZA IS LIFE
Is it just me or does this road go on forever?
How do you like your eggs in the morning? With a side of Rihanna, obv.
Haters are always going to hate, RiRi. We, for one, love your fashion fearlessness.
