Risque business

We’ve all noticed it – Kate Middleton has been making some bold style decisions in recent weeks.

First, there was that SS16-ready tiara at the State Banquet, which could have been a coincidence – being a Princess and all – if it wasn’t for the sassy sheer Jenny Packham dress at the Spectre premiere and the high fashion floral Erdem gown at the 100 Women In Hedge Funds Gala Dinner.

We were expecting to see less of Kate since the birth of Charlotte, but she doesn’t seem to have had a night in since she returned from maternity leave. Quite the opposite – she’s been out in some very un-Kate looks. Some have put this newfound confidence in her style and generally less conservative look down to the birth of her children, but now we know the real reason.

Though Kate has always famously shunned stylists, it's been rumoured she's been getting a little help from someone rather surprising - mother of Cara and Poppy, Pandora Delevingne! Pandora, who is a personal shopper at Selfridges, has been advising Kate on her more recent fashion choices of late and encouraged Kate into both the Jenny Packham and Erdem dresses!

Though it could seem like a surprising choice of unofficial adviser, the Delevingne's and K-Middy go way back - kind of. Pandora's mother, Cara's grandmother, was a lady-in-waiting to Princess Margeret!

In fact, we think Kate's up there with the most stylish power dressing Brit bunch... You know, Sophie Hunter, Amal Clooney and co. We all know what you look like isn’t the most important thing in life – and it definitely isn’t for these impressive women – but they manage to juggle their busy lives and topping best-dressed lists.

We chart their style in The Great British Dress Off…

The Floral Erdem Dress: Who Wore It Best?

Though we’re massive fans of Kate’s new fashion-fabulous direction, her hair and accessories are still firmly stuck in her former style. The jewel-coloured jacquard and the voluminous A-line cut need a slightly more pared back hairstyle and more minimal shoes.

The Colbalt Coat: Who Wore It Best?

Another day, another dress coat for Kate Middleton, but we rated her feminine belted Christopher Kane coat in Dundee which she layered – rather unexpectedly - with a cool roll neck jumper. We want Sophie Hunter’s Osman blanket coat, too, so they’re both winners here. (Sorry, school sports day all over again.)

The Red Gown: Who Wore It Best?

The red dress can be a make or break; it’s a tricky one – unashamedly glam and kind of showy. Kate Middleton’s Jenny Packham got its fair share of column inches, as did Sophie Hunter’s risqué Lanvin but Amal gets our vote for her Maison Margiela gown which kicked off emoji mania for its similarity to the dancing girl.

The jury’s still out on the winner of the Great British Power Dress Off, but we suddenly can’t wait for Kate’s next outing…
