You might not think it but Pirelli’s racy calendar is pretty much as big a fashion institution as they come and continues to draw a very impressive crowd of models, photographers and stylists year-in, year-out. In its 42 year-publication, ‘The Cal’ has seen the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss and Gisele Bundchen strip down to their lingerie in its glossy pages. So, yeah, it’s a pretty big deal.
However, for the 2015 fetish-themed edition of its iconic pin-up calendar, the team has to be the brand’s most starry yet with fashion editor and style maven Carine Roitfeld on styling duties, Steven Meisel behind the camera and the legendary Pat McGrath working her magic with a make-up brush; and that’s before we even get down to its all-star model line-up.
As for the girls, featuring month on month you’ll find Kendall Jenner’s BFF Gigi Hadid, the beautiful Joan Smalls, Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima, Raquel Zimmerman, Natalia Vodianova, Isabeli Fontana, Sasha Luss, Anna Ewers, Carolyn Murphy, Cameron Russell, Karen Elson and the calendar's first-ever plus size model, Candice Huffine.
For most of us, the thought of baring all in a latex bodice is enough to make us sob but, as these ladies prove, with a bit of confidence and A LOT of back-combing, it can look seriously hot.
Speaking of the shoot, photographer Meisel said there’s more to the racy shots than meets the eye: 'In my opinion, these are the key aesthetic models of today’s world. They represent the stereotypes that the fashion and star system impose upon us right now. I didn’t want to make a conceptual calendar, or link it to some particular location, but rather to create 12 posters in which women, in all their sensuality, are the absolute protagonists of 12 very different images. Since I wanted to limit the use of clothes and accessories and since I had absolute creative freedom, I found it very exciting to play with the colours, the makeup, and the materials. It was a very rewarding experience.'
The incredibly chic Carine Roitfeld also weighed in on her thoughts behind the scantily clad shoot: ‘As a material, latex is a recurrent element in the shots: it’s beautiful, it’s versatile, and it has a sheen that makes it alluring. We used it to give the pictures a hint of fashion that would add to the beauty of the models and just a touch of humour too. Steven and I are certainly not without a sense of humour and I think that this comes across in the photos: that’s why I’d say it’s a sexy calendar with an amusing touch of irony.’
The full set of images is yet to be released but by the looks of the first four shots, this could be the hottest Pirelli calendar yet. We bet we know someone who'd like it as a stocking filler…
