Nicolas Ghesquiere was at the centre of the Internet rumour mill last night, as news spread that he had supposedly filled the Marc Jacobs-shaped hole left at Louis Vuitton.
The news that Ghesquiere was the new creative director of Vuitton was “broken” by an Australian magazine, before being picked up by American news sources and then the rest of the global press. Meanwhile, Twitter was awash with exclamations that Ghesquiere (who made a shock exit from his post as artistic director at Balenciaga last November) was definitely the new creative director. News certainly does travel fast.
However, everyone may be getting just a little bit overexcited at the prospect of Ghesquiere’s appointment at the luxury French fashion house, as Vuitton spokespersons have so far denied the move has been confirmed.
When asked last night and this morning, representatives for Vuitton have neither let on whether they are considering Ghesquiere for the creative director role, nor have they given any hint about who else they have in mind.
That said, the rumours about Ghesquiere and Vuitton have been circulating for several months, so it's more than likely that there's something in all of this. All we can say for now is, watch this space…
