London-based Kokosalaki rarely wears anything but dark denim so she was a natural choice for Diesel's premium denim brand. Sophia will be leading the charge in overhauling Diesel's high end line. The label won't be showing as usual at September's New York Fashion Week but will return with Kokosalaki's stamp next February for spring/summer 2010.
With her own label's uber-cool collections establishing her as a leading designer, it's no wonder that Diesel chairman Renzo Rosso has every confidence in Kokosalaki's ability to revitalize the brand, '[Kokosalaki's] talent is incredible. Her taste in high-end fashion is already known, but what people do not necessarily expect from her is her skill in dealing with denim and contemporary casual, the core of Diesel Black Gold.'
So now 'Denim Guru' is yet another string she can add to her designing bow, which already comprise of a stint as Creative Director of French fashion house Vionnet as well as the role of designing costumes for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
And she's no stranger to the Diesel family as the brand's parent company, Only the Brave, bought out her signature line in January 2007. This deal will put her label back in Kokosalaki's hands, which she plans to continue to work on independently. We think someone's going to be a busy girl this year!
