Karl Lagerfeld takes Chanel to the ballet

What happens when you cross Chanel Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld with the Ballet Russes? You get one exquisite tutu…

Chanel's top dog has long been inspired by the ballet "as a child I was already impressed by old images of Anna Pavlova dancing the ballet," says Karl, "the Ballet Russes were an influence for me."

So Karl set about designing a sensational costume for the English National Ballet's Senior Principal Ballerina, Elena Glurdjidze. The hand-crafted tutu took three women over one hundred hours to stitch, embroider and trim with around 2500 feathers in Chanel's specialised Lemarie Atelier. Elena Glurdjidze confirmed just how important a ballerina's outfit is; "we always say that the look is 50% of how you are going to dance, so it is very important to have a beautiful costume."

On day of Elena's final fitting, the ballerina treated Karl to a performance of 'The Dying Swan' which the Kaiser filmed. Watch her beautiful performance below and check out those plumes!
