To celebrate the launch of my-wardrobe’s new Shoe Boutique, we speak exclusively to six of their star footwear designers.
Aquazzura designer Edgardo Osorio was raised between Columbia, Miami and London, and now lives in Florence, equating in a seriously sexy design aesthetic. His feather trims, jewel coloured satins and skyscraper heels are worthy of a night out in any of the world’s party capitals. Edgardo tells us about his inspirations, ambitions and why he has finally decided to step out from behind designers like Roberto Cavalli to set up his own business...
Where did the name Aquazzura come from?
Aquazzura comes from the Italian ‘Acqua Azzura’, which means blue water. I’ve always been in love with the sea and the sun and wanted a name that reminded me of this, even in the winter. The label takes the idea of a modern Dolce Vita and a year-round vacation lifestyle. My aesthetic reflects the beauty and sophistication of a certain kind of Italian style - never overdone. I believe that small, luxurious details make everything in life look great.
Why did you want to launch your own label?
After more than 10 years working for other luxury brands I wanted to create my own line with a very specific aesthetic and sensibility. I think the market is saturated with over-priced and over-designed shoes so I wanted to offer something simple and sophisticated, but still special. We’ve seen a lot of crazy shoes out there in recent years – it’s time to bring something elegant back.
How did you prepare for your own line?
Before starting my own label, I worked for some amazing companies - being at Cavalli and Ferragamo allowed me to be amongst the best people in the industry every day and work with the highest levels of luxury in the world. I learned how to appreciate good design and how real luxury is made. I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t experienced this.
Could you describe your design ethos for us?
I like to mix Italian sophistication and Latin sensuality. Oscar de la Renta once said you should walk like you have three men behind you. When you wear my shoes you should have five men behind you!
What was on your AW13 collection mood board?
Stanley Kubrik’s film Eyes Wide Shut was the main inspiration behind the collection. I also looked at images of Charlotte Rampling taken by Helmut Newton in the early 70’s. I love how powerful and beautiful women look in his pictures.
What goals do you have for the brand in the next few years?
I want to turn Aquazzura into a global accessories brand selling not only shoes, but bags, and a full range of accessories. My goal is to open stores in every major city worldwide within the next ten years. We already sell in 28 countries in the best department stores and boutiques in the world, but not in our own stores yet. We are planning to open our first boutique next year in New York, soon afterwards followed by London, so there’s lots of exciting things to look out for!
