The denim skirt used to remind us a bit too much of our teenage selves — the default 90s pairing with ruler straight hair, a strap top and slouch boots. But, thanks to the Vetements renaissance, the denim skirt has taken on a fresh look and they're all over Instagram.

The skirt that started it all was satisfyingly raw hemmed, like it was cut from a pair of jeans (then sold for £459). Topshop’s Cut Out Mini Skirt is a solid lookalike — the wash is slightly grungier, but the shape is spot on.

The denim skirt is a simple summer switch-in for jeans, but if you want to break from convention (and your #TBT wardrobe), here are the coolest new ways to wear denim, as seen on the stars...

1. Denim-On-Denim

We all like the Canadian Tuxedo — and this is just the summer rework, inspired by Miu Miu's all-over indigo. If you’re not feeling bold enough to do Rihanna’s jacket-as-shirt, just wear with a denim jacket over your top (as we saw done smart at Chanel’s AW16 show).

2. Denim With 90s Throwback Tops

It's a case of the old 'if it ain't broke' adage — wear with skimpy basics to recreate the weekend model wardrobe.

3. Go Preppy

Bretons, t-shirts and denim skirts make for the easiest off-duty styling. Rethink your outerwear to avoid looking like a yummy-mummy — break from expectation with a suede trench or sumptuous on-point shearling.

4. Smarten Things Up

Though pale denim makes for more casual looks, darker washes, or denim worn with black or navy, make for entirely workable non-weekend wear.

5. Go Basic

If you’re not on the #TBT basics, just wear your denim with a simple top. Accessories are a must.
