Henry Holland On Culottes, Beanies And How To Avoid Dressing Like One Of The Waltons

Autumn is here and with it comes an array of fashion questions. How can we make those key pieces we love from summer transitional for the colder months? How can we update an old winter favourite? Henry Holland is on hand to give us some expert advice...

Q

I got totally addicted to culottes over the summer, but now it’s cold, I don’t know how to wear them. Tights? Socks? What’s the answer?
Zoe, Reading

A

Wear them with either an ankle or knee boot for that full Abba Wins Eurovision silhouette! But beware of height issues (see Emily’s question). I love culottes, so why not keep the obsession fed with a wool or denim pair? See my latest resort collection. (Shameless plug.) We love these Luna Culottes from Monki or opt for a super cosy wool-blend pair from Mango.

Q

Now the weather is cooler, I’m thinking about hats. How can I update my beanie for the new season?
Isabella, Dudley

A

There is nothing like a great chunky beanie. Charlotte Simone has done a brilliant felt/beanie hybrid that looks absolutely amazing and also kills two birds with one stone.

Q

Cropped flares and ankle boots – I know it’s a hot look right now, but can I work that trend if I’m only 5ft 2in?

Emily, Richmond-Upon-Thames

A

Sorry to say it, but not all trends can work for everyone.  There is a distinct chance that if you try this, you’ll look like one of the Waltons or the middle child who’s been forced to wear some outgrown hand-me-downs. My suggestion is this: just pick one or the other and stick with that. A cropped flare and a sandal might work or an ankle boot and a mini skirt.
