EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Matthew Williamson on his new Bulgari bags

The designer speaks to InStyle about his mouth-watering collection of jewellery-inspired totes and clutches for Bulgari

“I do love a project,” Matthew Williamson told InStyle when we caught up with him at the Bulgari hotel prior to the launch of his new spring/summer 2011 handbag line for the jewellery house. And what a project this is! Geometric clutches in delicious jewel tones, including emerald, sapphire and ruby, and giant totes emblazoned with bright kaleidoscope-style prints that could only be Williamson’s, make up this capsule collection to end all capsule collections.

“I had a pretty free brief,” the designer told us, “so I skimmed the archives from about 1950 forward and came across the hexagonal shapes of the clutches that I embossed on the leather and that are also a part of the kaleidoscope print of the fabric bags. I added my own heart print for synthesis.”

So who will be buying these goodies, which will undoubtedly come with hefty price tags? “Obviously the Bulgari customer, who is a woman who appreciates great quality, glamour and luxury. In a way, they are the same principals of my own customers, although I see my line as slightly more bohemian and more relaxed.”

Like Sienna Miller? “People are always surprised to find out that I don’t design with her – or any woman in particular – in mind. But she’s my good friend and looks great in my clothes,” Williamson added.

After this Bulgari collection (which may carry on into the following season), the projects will continue. The designer has a book coming out on 18 October, which will be launched with an exhibition of his work at Somerset House, and then…

“In truth, I’ve always wanted to have my own comprehensive line of bags and shoes but I’m yet to find the right licence deal. So in the meantime I’m going to be stocking these bags in my own stores. The pink tote is definitely one for my girls.”

The capsule collection will be available at Bulgari stores from January 2011.
