Esteban Cortazar to leave Emanuel Ungaro
The House of Emanual Ungaro is due for a shake-up. After weeks of speculation, head designer Esteban Cortazar announced last Thursday that he is leaving the French fashion house.
A fashion prodigy, Cortazar had begun his career before hitting puberty. The Columbian only child of an artist mother and jazz singer father, he moved to Miami with his parents aged 11 and began styling the windows of local vintage shops.
At 15 he designed a 30-piece collection for Miami International Fashion Week, where his pieces were shown alongside notable designers such as Carolina Herrera, and caught the eye of major players in the fashion community. He launched his own label, Cortazar, in 2002, and brought Cindy Crawford out of retirement to model his clothes in 2004. In 2007, aged just 23, he took up the mantle of head designer at Emanuel Ungaro. Alongside this he has styled a slew of A-listers, including Paris Hilton, Eva Longoria and Beyonce. Makes you feel just a little bit inadequate doesn’t it?
The replacement for Cortazar is as yet unknown, but he or she will certainly have some big (and trendy) shoes to fill.
