Day Birger et Mikkelsen: A Lesson In Scandi Cool

Day Birger et Mikkelsen: A Lesson In Scandi Cool

We visited Copenhagen fashion week, and fell in love with Scandi style all over again. Especially at the Day Birger et Mikkelsen show...

Beyond the effortlessly cool aesthetic of black leather (and the fact that it looks GREAT with blonde hair), there’s a more practical reason to it being the core material of many Scandinavian brands. It’s COLD out there – as we experienced for ourselves when we attended Copenhagen fashion week. So replacing jeans with sexy black leather strides, or a blazer with a biker negates the need for deeply unsexy thermal underwear while achieving an easy, off-duty model kind of chic. You can’t argue with that.

And while black leather played an integral part in last week’s DAY Birger et Mikkelsen show, there was was plenty more on offer too; that classic Scandi feel was mixed with pretty metallic brocade, dusky pink and bright sulphuric yellow wool, and paisley and floral prints. Incorporating this eye-catching colour scheme as well as more cold weather styling tricks such as long, light layers and chunky knee-high socks gave this show an appeal that will translate perfectly to us here in the UK. We do love black leather, but we’re rather keen on colour and print too, and the two make a perfect pairing. The shoes on the catwalk were also a big hit, with gorgeous two-tone heeled booties and three-tone flat lace-up shoes standing out in particular.

With our increasingly unpredictable climate, Denmark and Sweden are the ideal countries to look to for inspiration. We picked up a few tips while we were over there too (today’s new styling idea: wearing a short black sheepskin gilet over a long black tailored coat), and are feeling all the more chic in the stormy weather as a result. Click on the DAY Birger et Mikkelsen gallery and we guarantee you’ll be inspired too.
