Jane Birkin. Françoise Hardy. Brigitte Bardot. The cool girls are always French. So it’s no surprise that so many lustworthy labels are French too. One of our faves, Comptoir Des Cotonniers – a one-stop shop for fantastic, quality basics – has a new designer, Anne-Valérie Hash, on board and she has breathed new life into the brand. Although pieces appear at first glance to be simple, when you look closer, you notice she has added a little quirk or update, making them feel entirely fresh. Our fashion editor Amy Bannerman went to Paris to choose her 5 favourites from the collection.
1.This is the Vobine jacket, £340. Every girl needs a leather biker jacket in her life. This one has a genius twist: the sleeves are joined to the body with zips, so you can remove the arms and wear it as a gillet. Two for the price of one!
2. You know when you see a design and think, how has this not been done before? These Violon jeans, £125, have a wraparound feature on the front, which Anne-Valérie promises will hold in your tummy (I have yet to road-test these but am exited to see if it works!). Wear with a classic Breton top and tuck the front in casually (like a French girl) to reveal this lovely feminine detail.
3. I’ve lost count of how many grey marl sweaters I’ve owned, but I’ve a feeling that the Viesly, £125, will become my new favourite. The godet of cream silk makes it suitable for evening wear. It would look great with a metallic skirt or skinny leather trousers.
4. As soon as I saw this western-inspired blouse – Vichy, £110 – I thought Alexa Chung. Expect to see her in one this summer. It is so effortless, yet incredibly chic. Team with worn-in blue girlfriend jeans and sandals. Or underneath a pair of dungarees, á la Alexa.
