A one-week holiday for most of us means epic sun-drenched skies, gorgeous azure seas and tiny cobbled streets that tell a thousand stories. What this also means in the media-savvy, 24-hour digital world we live in is: Insta GOLD. And, of course, having a wardrobe to match is essential.
As team InStyle hit the seas of Sicily last week for five days of agile working with The Yacht Week (to find out what really happened, you've got to read our Yacht Week diary), our stylist Hannah Lewis took care of the all-important holiday wardrobe checklist. For a completely shoppable guide on what to pack and where you can get your hands on every single one of her carefully curated Insta looks (follow InStyle UK), keep on scrolling.
The White Sundress
No holiday wardrobe is complete without a white dress for that last evening when your tan has reached full potential. For an effortlessly chic look, opt for a linen cami dress like this one. Cool to wear on hot, sticky nights and super easy to accessorize.
Shop The Look: White Dress, approx. £169, Reformation, Red Polka Dot Sliders, £395, Tabitha Simmons at Net-A-Porter, Gold Necklace, £210, Alighieri, Round Basket Bag, £51.74, Ellen and James, Retro Sunglasses, £295, Cutler and Gross
A Killer Pair Of Trousers
Be prepared to make a statement and opt for a lairy trouser. These can be a great print, snazzy fabric or even a bold coloured linen. Keep your top half simple with a bikini for day or just a basic vest for the evening.
The Silk Wrap Dress
This is my favourite item to wear this summer; they're super-flattering, light and fun to wear. But you only need one, maximum two. So find a print you love and you’ll be guaranteed to be wear it time and time again throughout summer. They double up as the ideal wedding guest dress too! Winning.
Shop The Look: Green Printed Silk Wrap Dress, approx. £170, Realisation Par, Straw Basket Bag, £135, Muun at Jet-A-Porter, Gold Hoop Earrings, £360, Anissa Kermiche, Tie-up Leather Sandals, £146.25, Tomas Maier at The Outnet
The Fun One-Piece
This is where you can be super-playful if you are on a fun holiday like a hen do. Think frills, bright colours and even embroidery to get that stand-out epic Insta shot.
Shop The Look: Lobster Swimsuit, £386, Adriana Degreas at Matchesfashion.com
The wrap style is huge this summer and that includes your separates, too. From silky ruffled blouses to skirts, just make sure you opt for a print that will be easy to match your other capsule holiday wardrobe pieces with. Style your spotted wrap blouse with your classic denim cuts-offs, or that printed skirt with a plain white tee and already you’ll have a totally updated look from last season.
Shirts and Shorts
The easiest, most comfortable, look to opt for holiday. Be sure to include one blue and white striped shirt and one great oversized white one (you may already have these in your wardrobe). When it comes to shorts we’re totally over the teeny cheek flashers and all about the high-waisted tailored kind. Keep it chic, ladies! You’ll also find that the shirts double up as a cover-up on the beach when worn unbuttoned with the sleeves rolled up.
A Bikini A Day
With a ton of bikinisi out there (see InStyle's full best bikini edit) your choice of style is totally dependent on your shape. The key styles that works best for a lot of sizes and busts are the minimal cuts - think basic bandeaus and triangle tops with fuss-free trimmings and in a supportive fabric. Add in a print if you want something a little more interesting that still fits really well. Pack at most one bikini per day, but never over 10.
The Crochet Skirt
Hold back on buying an entire crochet wardrobe before you jet off on vacay, as many of us fall into this trap and never actually wear any of it. One amazing crochet or knitted piece is plenty, and for a 2017 update, opt for a more mature style such as a midi skirt. Knits always carry a bit of weight so team with something minimal or lightweight on top.
Shop the Look: Midi Crochet Skirt, £260, Self Portrait at Jet-A-Porter, Cotton Cropped Tie Top, £270, Kalita at Matchesfashion.com, Gold Hoop Earrings, £360, Anissa Kermiche, Navy Tie Shoes, £450, Aquazzura
The Minimalist Swimsuit
When it comes to swimwear, it’s great to take a range of different styles for different occasions. Just one great simple-cut costume is all you will need in the case you decide to go for water sports, or you want to style with a pair of shorts for a day out in the sweltering heat. Look for a bold colour and match your accessories accordingly (matching the colour of your snacks is totally optional!).
The Stand-Out Sun Dress
Think girly! Everyone needs that one gorgeous number that consists of bows, stripes and even frills. Keep accessories to a minimum as this dress speaks for itself.
Shop The Look: Striped Shoulder Tie Dress, £470, SEA at Jet-A-Porter, Straw Basket Bag, £135, Muun at Jet-A-Porter
An Embroidered Mini-Skirt
The more intricate the better, the aim is to look like you’ve bought this from the local market on your travels (but don’t risk hoping to find something once you’ve got there). Think embroidery, tassels and vibrant colours. One of these will be plenty, and with stores such as Mango, New Look and Topshop all killing this style, it would be rude not to.
