I'd had my eyes on up-and-coming London brand Rixo for a while, when I decided that I was desperate to wear one of their dresses to my friend's wedding back in the summer. Chatting to another pal, ahead of the wedding, I told her about my plans to wear the Camellia dress from Rixo, only for her to reveal she had gone and bought the exact same dress, too. It was then I knew the brand was about to blow up. (N.B. I managed to persuade my friend to let me wear the dress. See pic below).
Turns out I was right! The rise of Rixo has been stratospheric. It all began when friends Henrietta Rix and Orlagh Mcclosky met at the London College of Fashion, where they studied Fashion Management, before landing jobs as Buyers at ASOS. After a few months, though, they realised their real passion lie in design so they quit and set up Rixo London in September 2015. It's now one of the fastest-rising brands in the fashion industry with some of their designs selling out 24 hours after they're released.
So, why is everyone from Kylie Minogue to Laura Whitmore to Pandora Sykes to Lisa Aiken totally fan-girling the brand? I initially fell in love with Rixo for their signature vintage-inspired prints and luxury silk fabrics (which FYI are all hand-created by the Henriette and Orlagh themselves).
Then there are the cuts, which are uber flattering – think thigh-high slits, subtle deep V necklines and long sleeves. You can tell that Henrietta and Orlagh really understand the female figure and what a dress can do to make us feel amazing. They use silks that float as you move and are cut in a sexy yet sophisticated way.
But it's the price point that really makes Rixo stand-out. Full length silk gowns are all priced around the £200-£300 mark and silk tops at around £150. The cost-per-wear on a Rixo piece would break even – and then some.
The reason for their overdraft-friendly price points? Henrietta and Orlagh are just like us. They wanted beautiful, stand-out silk pieces for special occasions that they could afford and continue to get more wear out of by styling with knits, trainers and jeans.
To keep their overheads low, they’ve done everything themselves from hand drawing their prints in their West London living room to flying to China to meet with fabric wholesalers to knocking on the doors of the press (ours included!). They may not have slept for two years now, but Rixo's now stocked in 180 retailers worldwide and it’s safe to say they’re killing it.
“Every day is pretty mental as up until 3 weeks ago there was six of us all set up in our living room," says Henrietta. "With customers coming in all day to try things on in our bathroom.”
Rixo has managed to place their designs in every single UK stockist they had on their hit list from Net-a-Porter to Selfridges, but are conscious of the fact that their designs are so stand-out that the last thing one of their customers wants is to see someone else wearing a similar piece, it's for that reason the girls only produce 50 of any one design. "We don’t want to over saturate the brand," Henrietta told me. "It still need a level of exclusivity.”
What's next for Rixo? World domination, basically. In 2018 the brand will expand their stockists in the USA aswell as hitting Australia, Canada and Italy. And for the UK? The excellent news is the girls are currently working on knitwear, jewellery and bags for their collections next year. And for Spring Summer '18- they've told me it's all inspired by Studio 54, so expect some studs, diamonds, metallics and some seriously fabulous pieces.
So for the perfect party dress or wedding guest dress, look no further then Rixo. I can honestly say I have worn mine over and over again, I know you will too. I've picked out some of my favourite pieces from the current collection below.
