We’ve got a sort of love hate relationship with the maxi dress – stretchy beach cover-ups, the ‘Boho’ look circa 2007… It's a mixed bag but we can’t deny they are a handy throw-on-and-go outfit for winter.
The obvious thing that makes them a sensible choice when it’s totally and unbearably cold is the length – they’re long, which eradicates any need to think about tights. (Though, we’ve actually decided they’re not that bad.)
They’re a safe choice if you’re not quite sure where your plans will take you – a long jumper dress can see you through from commute to cocktails totally acceptably, and florals are an all-year-round, day or night thing too.
If you’re looking for an evening maxi dress for a Christmas party, go for lace or chiffon – it’s big right now and an easy way to nail those tricky festive dress codes.
We dream of Chloe and Valentino maxis are our dream but Topshop and Zara have similar styles if they’re a little out of your Christmas budget.
Your shoe choice is simple, too – go for an ankle boot for Alexa Chung chic or go all red carpet Dakota Johnson in heeled sandals. You’ll get cold feet - don’t say we didn’t warn you - so go heavy on the top half in an oversized wool blanket coat.
A maxi dress + ankle boots… You’ve got your out-the-door routine down to record minutes, perfect for those winter mornings when getting out of bed seems pretty much the worst thing ever.
Effortless, chic and understated – all hail the maxi dress!
