Summer work wear can be a real struggle to get right. By the time the temperatures are hitting high 20s and even 30s, your usual office repertoire is a no-go.
Tailoring and heavy fabrics go out the window (almost literally, when we’re rushing around in the morning), and we have to welcome lighter, looser pieces if we’re going to survive the daily commute.
Summer work dresses are the obvious choice, but we’re not a big fan of baring our legs at a moment’s notice, before we’ve had a chance to get them ready for the big reveal. If you’ve got round to waxing and tanning (genuine or faux), amongst other things, then your sartorial decisions are easier. A dress – we’re thinking a midi or below, but just over-the-knee works too – and sandals or flats are a simple go-to.
If you’re not a fan of the summer dress – for whatever reason, then there’s still plenty of other options out there. This is when a pair of shorts really comes in to their own. Culottes and city shorts are basically our saviour in a heatwave; team with everything from crisp t-shirts to shirts, and with loafers or brogues, and you’ve got yourself a mix and match summer wardrobe.
Jumpsuits are an easy throw-on outfit, too. We're loving black for versatility or a colour pop shade like red that'll make it an easy day-to-night outfit in itself.
Parisian chic is a good style to look to for summer work wardrobe inspiration. Granted, there’s a lot of black but in terms of staying cool while keeping your style and dignity intact, fashionistas like Caroline de Maigret get it so right. Think tailored trousers, laidback shirts and simple dresses with sandals.
These looks aren't just for flat fans either. Smarten up separates with a simple strappy sandal or heeled ankle boot.
