Arabella On: How To Wear Ankle Socks And Heels

Arabella On: How To Wear Ankle Socks And Heels

Want to take a sneaky peak at next season and test out one of the biggest trends to come? Yes? The ankle sock is back! Who would have thought this simple (and cheap) accessory could update your whole look right now - and take you into next A/W too.

This is the perfect time to try it. As the weather gets warmer and the first rays of sun appear, it's time to ditch the opaques and get out those legs that haven’t seen the light of day all winter. Scary thought? But if it still doesn't feel quite warm enough to expose your toes, or you haven't had time for that all important first pedicure of the summer yet, then an ankle sock with shoes is a good way to keep your feet warm and hide any chipped nail varnish that has been there since Christmas.

Having long been a favourite with Japanese fashionistas who manage to look cute and chic no matter what age in their black ankle socks and brogues, this isn't an entirely new trend. Last summer saw the rise of the sock and hiking sandals  - once favoured by European campers and modern hippies, which then became popular with the fashion crowd, but it’s hard to wear, and men just don’t get it.

But back on the catwalk next winter - it’s all about the heel and sock. Seen at Prada, Loewe, Valentino and Gucci in a variety of different styles. So no matter what shoes you wear or what style of sock you like, there will be one for you, and as trouser hemlines have been rising and exposing that all important ankle, the sock has become the focal point. But it's time to banish boring black and grey, make a statement, and have some fun. There's a whole new world of fancy socks out there to discover, and what's great about this trend is that it won't break the bank. Maybe it's a fishnet, or something chunky you fancy, or perhaps try a pattern or print - even a frill, there’s a huge variety to choose from.

So whether you are wearing your crop jeans, summer dress or mid calf length skirt try some colourful or cheekily emblazoned socks with your heels, a look that may have once seemed solely the terrain of science teachers.

Having given this my own personal a test run from high street stores such as ASOS and Topshop to sock specialists Tabio and Panterella, here are some of my favourites:
