Pleated skirts have been around for years – a preppy style staple teamed with well-worn t-shirts and leather jackets for that I-shop-at-Whistles chic.
But, they’ve had a bit of a switch up – the feminine pleats and pretty chiffon are no longer the focus. It’s about finding it’s masculine match for a more balanced look, toughening your midi up with a thick knit jumper.
Alexa Chung is the master of this look – we saw her last fashion week in the gold Gucci skirt with a striped cashmere sweater, then in a silver skirt with a slouchy blue jumper.
This season even Beyonce has been wearing Gucci’s metallic striped pleated skirt, with a pink studded jacket and intarsia jumper.
Our favourite fashion face Giovanna Battaglia also wore one — just classic silver — at Paris Fashion Week, with a borrow-from-your-boyfriend (if your boyfriend is a Californian surfer) tie-dye jumper from The Elder Statesman. In London, she wore the same skirt with a white shirt and a cinching XXL waist belt.

It’s the easiest and most failsafe look at the moment – skirt, jumper and a pump or strap heeled sandal, and you’re G2G. The simplest kind of combo for work — add an ankle sock when it gets too cold for toes out.
Just don’t go too matchy-matchy with the colours, think fairly contrasting whether it’s Chung-style stripes, Battaglia tie-dye or just a bold colour. And go for a little heel to elevate the look and avoid any potential frump.

And they’re everywhere – almost literally; all over the high street, as well as on the SS17 catwalks. There were wrap-around styles at Haider Ackermann, pleat on pleat Versace and at Gucci, obviously.
Zara’s block colour skirt is one of our high street favourites (and it’s under £26) and Missy Empire’s gold one is a good copy for Alessandro Michele’s.
