Midi dresses are a wardrobe staple that’s often forgotten amongst sassier minis and more statement maxis but this summer, it's back.
Maybe it’s the mid-calf length, which makes them kind of awkward when it’s anything but bare leg-worthily sunny, but they don’t seem to get the talk up they deserve.
This season, we’re bringing back the mid-length as, quite the opposite from the tricky in-between area, we think they’re the best of both worlds.
It’s actually very forgiving. It’s enough of a leg glimpse to show off a new tan (real or fake) but not enough to feel self-conscious if your legs haven’t seen the sun this year and are looking a little palid, or even if you’ve had a fake tan disaster. The crux is the dress is the focus, not the legs as with a mini dress, and that’s the way we like it.
Though it’s a tough call, our favourites have got to be the denim ones. Yes, all of them. From Marques’Almeida’s raw-hemmed strappy number to Sea’s classic denim dungaree dress, they’re top of our midi dress wish list.
Then there’s the old classics like shirt dresses which are best mid-length. While loose-fit maxis can swamp your figure, the midi is perfect. For holiday cover-ups, too. The crochet dress gets our (and the rest of the fash pack’s) vote this summer and as well as on point, they’re not too pricey. The high street has a great offering, from Mango to River Island, in a range of shapes. Not just for layering over swimwear on the beach, you can take tips from the A-list and wear over oversized underwear – granny pants and the likes.
They’re not only a weekend wardrobe winner, they’re the perfect silhouette for wedding season too. We’re loving a timeless A-line shape in a colour pop shade, with a pair of tie-up heels.
Whatever the occasion, find a midi dress you love in our edit of the best…
