Forget polka dots, this summer it's all about gingham...

From Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz, to those iconic shots of Liz Taylor in a yellow gingham shirt and Audrey Hepburn in gingham peddle-pushers, it's the print that has always screamed chic summer. But, for spring summer 2017, it's a little bit more grown-up. Think peek-a-boo cut-outs at Molly Goddard, sleek slips at Pringle of Scotland and flirty skirts at House of Holland. Carolina Herrera used the print in its tradional black and white form on one-shoulder dresses, while Peter Pilotto fused red, greens and blue patterns, then added fun animal-shaped patches.

The high street has been quick to jump on the check trend, too, with the pattern on everything from dresses to tops and even bags. Smart enough for work, yet laidback enough for after-work drinks, too, it's so much cooler than florals and much less obvious. Though, we always have a soft spot for florals, if you do too check out our edit of the best floral dresses

To keep it from looking fussy, pair with a block colour. Black and white always looks good with red - even better if it's a Gucci backless loafer. If you're still worried about picnic blanket connatotions, start with a neck scarf as seen at House of Holland.

Here are the InStyle top gingham picks for 2017...
