'I loved them so much I bought 20' said one fashion editor. But with denim, shirting not to mention those perfect tees, Gap's '90s Archive Re-Issue is a dream teenage shopping list come true...
From those logo hoodies, to the pocket t-shirts and high-rise jeans, when it came to teenage dressing, Gap in the 90s was the place to spend all our hard-earned baby-sitting money in. And while the days of staying in on a Saturday night to mind the neighbours' kids might be well behind us, our love for all things 90s dressing is very much still alive.
Quick to feed our appetite for all things '90s nostalgia is Gap who have just launched a capsule collection entitled 'The Archive Re-Issue.' Featuring all our faves from back in the day - think high-waisted reverse jeans, low-back bodies and of course those oversized Oxford shirts a la Ross from Friends - you can browse the full collection online or for a full trip down the 90s memory lane head to the I am Gap pop-up store in London’s Covent Garden which is also offering a personalisation service plus exclusive illustrated patches.

Launched during London Fashion Week, it surprisingly became the go-to pit-stop for fashion editors in-between shows (myself included) for last minute purchases. While Zara, Cos and Whistles are the usual fash pack panic-stops to stock up on whatever the season's must have frow item is (this year it was a thin roll-neck to layer under an oversized striped shirt or a quilted jacket) Gap would rarely if ever feature. That was until word got out about the Archive Re-Issue. Fashion and interiors writer, Carolyn Asome popped in on a gap between shows confessing: 'I've bought around 20 t-shirts which I will ration over the next few years. I love the cut of the sleeveless t-shirt which for me, is the perfect shape t-shirt. It's a bit looser, boyish and also a bit sexy. Also, these re-issue t-shirts are made from a more traditional cotton, that doesn't seem to exist anymore - I've been looking for years, without any mixes or slub linen or synthetic fabrics.'
For me it was a black denim jacket, an oversized denim shirt and grey logo sweatshirt from the men's section, the latter to wear at the first weekend post fashion month, that caught my eye. I wore the jacket on the first day and must have been asked at least 15 times where was it from. What made it even better was their surprised reaction when I said 'Gap.'
Fashion writer and blogger Hannah Rochelll AKA @enbrogue was similarly surprised by how much this collection ups Gap's game. 'I haven't shopped at Gap for years but the 90s re-issue stuff reeled me back in because that's the decade I first started shopping there. I love the thick cotton that the T-shirts are made from (none of this slub nonsense!) and the high neck ribbed racer back vests (so Britpop). While both of those were high on my list for nostalgia reasons, my favourite purchase was a pair of tracksuit bottoms with go-faster stripes down each leg from the men's section that I wear with a tailored coat for a more modern than 90s look.'
To concide with the re-launch there's also an ad campaign that pays tribute to the original Gap ads of the 90s. The 2017 version featuring a string of 90s showbiz offspring including Lizzy Jagger, Rumer Willis and Evan Ross. Plus Naomi Campbell even returns wearing the same denim shorts and tee that she wore in the original commercial over 20 years ago.
Pity we still can't do the same.
