We Asked Hollywood’s Top Stylists What We Should Wear This Summer (You’re Welcome)

Imagine if you had Brie Larson or Gwyneth Paltrow’s stylist to help you with your summer wardrobe dilemmas? Well, it just so happens…

Earlier this year, I found myself in the rather envious position of being in L.A.’s Sunset Tower Hotel sipping cocktails. The occasion? The Hollywood Reporter’s 25 Most Powerful Stylists List, presented by Jimmy Choo, now in its 5th year and the most important date in a super stylist’s diary; it’s the equivalent of being invited to attend the Grammys or the BAFTAs and EVERYONE wants to make it onto that list.

All the big names were there, including Oscar winner Brie Larson’s stylist Cristina Ehrlich, and Elizabeth Stewart, who counts best dressed gallery favourite Cate Blanchett as one of her clients. It’s the kind of event where you could easily find yourself sitting next to a megastar at dinner like one of Elizabeth Saltzman’s clients, Gwyneth Paltrow (Jimmy Choo’s creative director Sandra Choi had that pleasure), or discussing the best shoes to wear with jeans with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, as I did. It’s also the ideal opportunity to get a few tips on how to dress for an important occasion from the women who style the most stylish women in the world. So that’s exactly what I did; here’s what they had to say…

The Super Stylist: Cristina Ehrlich
Clients: Brie Larson and Anna Kendrick
If Cristina styled you for a city wedding: ‘There are lots of ways of having a feminine, polished look with suiting, and there’s something really nice about not wearing a dress all the time. Try an ankle boot, so it doesn’t feel too conservative.’

Jacket, £145, and trousers, £310, both Zadig and Voltaire; top, £247, Aries; shoes, £750, Jimmy Choo

The Super Stylist: Elizabeth Saltzman
Clients: Gwyneth Paltrow and Saoirse Ronan
If Elizabeth styled you for chic summer cocktails: ‘Definitely wear colour - stay away from black - because you get noticed when you wear colour. You want shoes you can stand tall and kick ass in; for me it’s always something with a little bit of a platform’

Dress, from a selectino, Vilshenko (try net-a-porter.com for similar); shoes, from a selection, Jimmy Choo

The Super Stylist: Tara Swennen
Clients: Kristen Stewart and Emily Ratajkowski
If Tara styled you for a swanky supper: ‘I love starting with a statement shoe. Make the rest of the outfit simple but that’s the beautiful thing; most women go for their basic black dress so you have to look to the accessories to jazz it up.’

Coat, £1,395, Burberry; dress, from a selection, Barbara Casasola; shoes, £475, Jimmy Choo

The Super Stylist: Leesa Evans
Clients: Amy Schumer and Edward Norton
If Leesa styled you for your dream job interview: ‘When you feel comfortable you feel confident, and then you can do anything. If your outfit is the first thing you look at I would say tone it down. I want to look at your face first and foremost, and then your outfit second.’

Sweater, £295, Joseph; shirt, £440, Marni; skirt, from a selection, J.W.Anderson; shoes, £475, Jimmy Choo
