Outside the Ganni Spring Summer 18 Show

Our US neighbours have given us many things - the sitcom that never gets old AKA Friends, Starbucks iced frappuccinos and an addiction to Glossier's Haloscope but one of our most recent favourite imports is the concept of 'Black Friday.' Originating in Philadelphia, the concept and term has slowly made its way to the UK. Held annually the day after Thanksgiving in the US, on the 24th November, Black Friday is essentially the biggest shopping day of the year, with huge discounts across electrics, lifestyle, beauty and best of all fashion too. Last year, in the UK it was estimated that £1.27 billion was spent in the 24 hour period - up 16 per cent on 2015. Further research showed that Britons spent a record £5.8 billion over the four days between Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2016.  Online retailers took approximately £2.8 billion of this - up 20 per cent from £2.3 billion in 2015, according to the data. So with consumers really embracing the concept, 2017 is set to be even bigger and better, with even more retailers taking part.

Last year on Black Friday there were major savings to be made across clothing, shoes, jewellery and accessories but one of our fave categories has to be Black Friday dresses. Think about it, with a good dress all you need to do is add shoes, a jazzy pair of earrings and you're good to go. From the boardroom, to the bar, to date nights and holiday romances, the right dress has your back. River Island, Urban Outfitters, Guess, Miss Selfridge, House of Fraser, French Connection, Net-a-Porter, all offered 50% off selected lines.  Roland Mouret offered 20% plus The Outnet were offering a whooping 80% off selected items. November is also the ideal time to get that dress, that you know you'll actually wear for years to come. From a really good little black dress to a nautical striped summer number, think long-term rather than completely trend-led for the ultimate bang for you buck. Plus with Christmas looming, it gives you the perfect opportunity to nail party dressing without a hefty price tag. Here are the categories to look out for...

Best Black Friday Deals For A Little Black Dress

Cara Delevigne

Timeless, classic, investment buy, wardrobe saviour, when it comes to the little black dress AKA the LBD, there are so many terms bandied around hailing it's magical properties. But the thing is when it comes down to the nitty gritty, if chosen correctly a black dress is the one item in your wardrobe that will work for all those tricky and often last minute invites. Networking cocktails? Tick. Awards presentation? Tick, tick. An evening wedding reception. Tick, tick, tick. No wonder it's a go to for celebrities and the myriad of events they have to attend. From red carpet premieres, to swish dinners and even store opening appearances, everyone from Alicia Vikander to Alexa Chung DJ-ing and Kate Moss have been papped in a LBD. It also works all year round. In winter, it looks great when worn with tights, a fun fuzzy jacket and  a vampy lip whereas come summer, although not your typical combination, an LBD on a sunny day can look totally chic. Much more subtle than a jazzy printed number, the blank canvas also leaves you plenty of room to add pops of colour with accessories. Workwear wise look to Reiss and Whistles for a chic but fashionable take, & Other Stories and Topshop have become staples for evening looks while the classic cuts at M&S are not to be scoffed at. For higher budgets head to Dolce & Gabanna, Tom Ford and Victoria Beckham for the ultimate investment buys.

Best Black Friday Deals For Red Dresses...

From Princess Diana to the Duchess of Cambridge and even Posh Spice, red dresses have long been the go-to for smart women who want their clothes to make a powerful impact. A key trend for AW17, red dresses were all over the New York, London, Milan and Paris runways. From peplum-hemmed at Prada, to velvet at Chloe and long-sleeved at Victoria Beckham, designers proved that a red dress is going to be the hardest working item in your wardrobe this season. Versace showed slinky versions while Proenza Schouler and Monse went for a looser silhouette but in screen siren crimson still sexy.

Best Black Friday Deals For Slip Dresses...

With '90s and '00s nostalgia showing no signs of slowing down, a slip dress is becoming somewhat of our wardrobe faves. They're ideal when we want to feel a little bit edgy like Courtney Love and Gwen Stefani back in the day or even Jennifer Aniston who in the early 2000s proved a simple slip accessorized with sandals and a smile will never go out of style. However, what we love most about a slip dress, is just how easy it is to take from spring to summer all the way through to winter with some clever styling hacks. Dress down with trainers for hot summer days, or up with a strappy sandal for hot summer nights. Wear over a t-shirt when the temperature starts to drop for a more grungy take and team with an oversized jumper and boots come winter for a cosy take. Street style is where the slip dress really shines with everyone from Lucy Williams to Camille Charriere styling it out. The high street wins at affordable versions with Topshop, ASOS, Miss Selfridge and even Debenhams doing a myriad of interesting styles. Longer lengths work better for dressier occasions, for a summer wedding we love to pair a darker shade with a blazer and flat sandals to avoid looking too boudoir. Raey, DVF, Vince and Ganni are perfect for keeping it cool but classy.

Best Black Friday Deals For Summer Dresses...

When the temperature dial starts to rise, a summer dress is the item we all start reaching for in our wardrobes. But it's a tricky category what with lengths, materials and cut-outs all issues to be contended with. When chosen correctly, the right summer dress promises to be the most hard working item in your summer wardrobe, ideal for both workdays and weekends. It's also a no-brainer when it comes to getting dressed first thing when you really don't have time to debate what goes with what. Just throw it on, add some shoes, and a pair of on-trend earrings and you're good to go. For the office go for something with a higher neckline and cap sleeves to keep it chic rather than casual. Look for materials that are lightweight and cool. You don't want anything too clingy or that will crease easily. Wrap style shapes always look profesh, and work for every budget, from ASOS, to Misguided to DVF and Ganni. Sandals are the obvious summer footwear but if you fancy mixing it up, try out an ankle sock with classic brogue, loafer or chunky heels. For holiday wear, look for cotton fabrics to avoid that clammy feeling. Here you can be a little bit more playful, think peek-a-boo cut-outs and asymmetrical hemlines. Zara, M&S, Topshop and Miss Selfridge are perfect for stocking up in and look for nautical stripes, pretty floral prints and ice-cream shades for a subtle nod to the season.
