Balenciaga, it's a bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. And yesterday, the brand's Creative Director Demna Gavasalia, took this divisional thinking to a whole new level when he sent Crocs down the runway. Dubbed 'The Foam,' Demna's version feature a 10cm platform heel and kitsch charms including flowers, dogs and landmarks.
Of course, this isn't the first time fashion has played with the idea of Crocs. Since 2016, Christopher Kane has been working with the company and during the past month we've seen plenty of street style stars including Veronika Heilbrunner and InStyle UK's own Editor-in-Chief Charlotte Moore, sporting his crystal embellished versions from his autumn winter 2017 collection.
However, the decision by Balenciaga, the 3rd best selling brand in the world, to play with the rubber clogs too is set to totally change the footwear game.
'When Balenciaga approached us, we were intrigued by the opportunity to push the boundaries of our design and molding capabilities to see what we could create together,' Michelle Poole, SVP of global product and marketing for Crocs, told Footwear News. 'Working with Balenciaga has been so much fun for our team, and once again demonstrates the relevance of our iconic clog in today’s fashion and design world, as well as allowing us to tap into the excitement and energy that comes from unexpected partnerships.'
And whilst reaction on the Internet varied from 'WTF' and critical memes, others seem generally psyched to try them with a photo of the pink version on Croc's Instagram receiving over 7,000 likes with many users asking how and when they can order them. Demand, is not that surprising though given that Balenciaga's Ikea-esqe giant shopping bag was one of the biggest sellers of last season.
For those who are keen to add an extra 10cm to their height, the Foam shoes will be available exclusively at Balenciaga stores and on the Balenciaga website next spring.
