Celebs In Suits

Katharine Hepburn in a film still from Holiday, 1938

It is said that Katharine Hepburn, winner of four Oscars and ranked the greatest female star in the history of America by the American Film Institute, never owned her own skirt or dress.

Taking Marlene Dietrich’s lead, Katherine Hepburn too chose suits and shirts over figure-hugging dresses. When asked in an interview why she wore trousers, she simply replied that they were ‘comfortable’.

In the Hollywood era of the Blonde Bombshell, Hepburn stood quite apart in tomboy tailoring and favouring to wear no make-up whatsoever. With a long, lean figure, she retained a defiant femininity in loose fitting suits teamed with classic blouses and loafers.
