Over the past year or so, it's safe to say we've seen Cara Delevingne take a step back from modelling to focus on her acting career.

To date, we've largely seen the 22-year-old in cameo roles, save for her substantial part in a one-off Sky Arts drama last year, and a turn opposite Pharrell Williams in a Chanel short film.

But with six movies due out this year alone, there's no hiding from the fact that we're going to be seeing a lot more of Cara on the big screen – and she'll be doing more than just showing her face.

And first of this slew of movies to hit cinemas is Face of an Angel – a psychological thriller directed by Michael Wintebottom which is loosely based on the murder of university student Meredith Kercher in Perugia in 2007, and the subsequent trial of Amanda Knox.

Set in Siena, the film follows documentary maker Thomas Lang (Daniel Brühl) who has been tasked with adapting a book by journalist Simone Ford (Kate Beckinsale), which recounts the murder of a young woman by her flatmate. Cara Delvingne plays Melanie, a British student who forges a close friendship with Thomas after offering to be his guide to the Italian city.

And in this trailer we get to see Cara show off her acting chops properly, as she gets embroiled in the sinister goings on in Siena, and in her increasingly intimate relationship with Thomas. Plus, we reckon she makes a convincing university undergrad in her plaid shirt and hoody. One thing's for sure – this role is a far cry from the catwalks and party lifestyle she's used to.

The film is released on 27 March.
