The 18-year-old diver told BBC Sport how David had been texting him support and advice after he missed out on a medal in the synchronised 10m-platform event with Pete Waterfield.

"He wanted to wish me well and say keep your chin up," Tom said.

"David was asking how I've been feeling, giving me advice about what to take out of the synchro. He was kind of asking me the right questions, telling me it's not that bad and that I can come back."

David watched nervously from the stands with sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz at the diving final in the Aquatics Centre, then look ecstatic after Tom won the bronze. Afterwards he took to Facebook to say congratulations and added a photo of the two of them with the caption: "Was great to catch up with @TomDaleyOfficial after the event last night, so happy for him after the year he's been through."

David isn't the only celebrity fan who's shown their support for Tom. Cheryl Cole has also requested a diving lesson from Mr Daley.
