We bet she doesn't sit on the back seats
Queen Elizabeth celebrating her 90th birthday this year, and after 64 years on the throne, Her Royal Highness deserved a decent birthday bash. But if you think she’s just into cucumber sandwiches and Earl Grey tea, you’re oh so wrong – Elizabeth has a wicked sense of humour.
Here are 10 reasons why the Queen is actually pretty hilarious…
1. She still loves to get behind the wheel
Yes, the Queen might have all the staff she could ever wish for, including a personal driver (or 7), but she’s not too royal to get behind the wheel of her Range Rover and drive granddaughter-in-law Kate Middleton around her country estate. She’s having a great time, just look at her face!
2. She’s not afraid to be a bad grandma when she needs to be
William fondly remembers the time his grandmother gave him ‘an almighty bollocking’ for chasing Zara (that’s Phillips, FYI) around on a quadbike in Balmoral. ‘Peter and I managed to herd Zara into a lamppost and it came down and nearly squashed her. I remember my grandmother being the first person out at Balmoral running across the lawn in her kilt’.
3. She’s got a sneaky sense of humour
She occasionally strolls around in full public view (with a heavy security team of course), but her response when asked by a group of American tourists if she’d ever met the queen? Total lolz. Liz apparently replied by saying ‘no’, before pointing at her police guard and saying ‘but he has’.
4. She has a cute great-grandma name
Kate Middleton revealed that George calls Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II the much shorter ‘Gan Gan’ – sweet!
5. She loves to spoil her great-grandchildren
K-Middy also spilled that Elizabeth ‘always leaves a little gift or something in their room when we go and stay’. We bet George is hoping for chocolate.
6. She knows the power of a photobomb
Thought your dog photobombing your selfie was impressive? Nothing beats HRH smiling her way into this selfie taken by Australian hockey player Jayde Taylor.
7. She loves binge-watching her favourite TV shows
Did you really think the Queen would race home from a royal engagement to catch Downton Abbey? Rumour has it the royal family send out a list of programmes they want to watch, which are promptly delivered to their current location. In the past, The Queen has said that she’s a fan of Eastenders, Coronation Street, The Bill, Dad’s Army, Doctor Who, Antiques Roadshow and even The X Factor. According to author Brian Hoey, Elizabeth loves pointing out all the historical mistakes in Downton Abbey too – well, she did stay in Highclere Castle as a child, where the series was filmed…
8. She knows when she’s had one too many
The Queen made a historic trip to Dublin in 2011, but their national drink didn’t take Elizabeth’s fancy – she politely turned down a pint of Guinness from Dublin’s flagship brewery.
9. She’s not immune from RBF
Sometimes, Liz just can’t hide the fact that 64 years on the throne can get a bit boring…
10. But she loves to laugh
At her family, especially. Prince Phillip, we’re not sure whether she’s laughing at you or with you…
And after all the royal protocol, Kate Middleton is just a normal mum, too...
