The MTV Video Music Awards: All the fashion!

Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Madonna and more get on their gladrags for The MTV Video Music Awards 2009

All the stars of the music world last night flocked to New York's Radio City Music Hall for the MTV Video Music Awards, hosted by Brit comedian Russell Brand.

The annual awards shows is inevitably the night where the divas and songstrels of the year go head to head in the fashion stakes, and this year was no exception.

Given this excuse to push the boat out, it's no surprise that Lady Gaga and Katy Perry took their looks to the extreme, with Gaga sporting a Phantom of the Opera-inspired mask and dramatic feathered neck-brace over her Jean Paul Gaultier gown, and Miss Perry looking amazing in a spiked corset dress... Maybe she wanted the other songstrels to keep their distance!

Taylor Swift looked super-glam in her blinged-out, diamante one-shoulder gown by Kaufman Franco Resort 2009, although her new sophisticated look was somewhat overshadowed when Kanye West stormed the stage as she picked up her Best Female Video award, claiming that Beyonce should have won instead!

Although the celebs all seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as usual, this year's event was a little more sombre than before as the stars paid tribute to The King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

The show kicked off with a moving eight-minute speech celebrating his achievements by Madonna (elegant in Jonathan Saunders), which was followed by a dance routine by Janet Jackson, as she recreated some of Michael's most famous moves.

However, many of the celebs seemed to be taking style-inspiration from Michael himself, with Beyoncé rocking the single-glove look as she performed her hit Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It), and Katy Perry sporting a Jackson-inspired diamante corset as she performed Queen's We Will Rock You.

Leighton Meester and Jennifer Lopez were among the other stars pulling out all the stops on the red carpet with the Gossip Girl wowing in a metallic Christian Cota fall 2009 dress, and J-Lo opting for Louis Vuitton. Beyonce also turned heads as she ignored the no.1 celebrity rule...Don't wear red on the red carpet! She looked great all the same in a cute scarlet ruffle-fronted minidress, before swapping into a sparkling leotard for her performance.
