The InStyle Met Ball 2014 Awards

The InStyle Met Ball 2014 Awards

Last night’s Met Ball was a total fashion bonanza. But who were the real winners? We’ve combed through the lot to bring you our InStyle red carpet awards

The award for… Dressing The Least Like Alexa Chung: Alexa Chung
She’s gone all grown-up! La Chung’s Nina Ricci gown, with its distinctly Dynasty-esque Eighties vibe, is a departure from her usual short hem or prom dress red carpet get-up. And we like it!

The award for… Following The Brief: Lupita Nyong’o
Many celebrities ignored the dress code of ‘white tie and decorations’ and chickened out in minimalism, so we applaud Lupita for sticking to the brief in her fabulously decorated flapper-inspired Prada dress. Bling!

The award for… I Don’t Want To Wear A Dress: Cara Delevingne
Pushing the formal dress code limits with trousers and a crop top is a risky business. But with Stella making said trousers and Cara wearing them, in this case it’s the perfect look on the perfect girl. With no giant ballgown, she’s upped the drama instead with some ‘hello’ hair and make-up.

The award for… Best Arm Candy: Diane Kruger with Joshua Jackson
Yeah, Diane Kruger looks GREAT in her Boss dress, but she looks even better standing next to her dashing partner, Joshua Jackson. Extra points for doing what many men didn’t: reading the invitation and wearing a white tie.

The award for… All American Prom Chic: Taylor Swift
You SHALL go to the ball Taylor! This pink satin Oscar De La Renta confection is a wholesome winner for America’s sweetheart. That big bustle is also great for those over-the-shoulder red carpet poses.

The award for… Pulling Out All The Stops: Sarah Jessica Parker
While we wouldn’t wear this ourselves for fear of getting lost under the layers or over-balancing because of our massive hair, we do LOVE SJP in her quirky Oscar de la Renta confection. Look how happy it makes her!

The award for… Best Colour Clash: Emma Stone
Oh, Emma! You simply can’t get it wrong right now. We love how this Thakoon outfit looks like you just randomly threw on a top and a skirt and thought, “yeah, they’re both pink, that should work”. It totally does.

The award for… Best High Street: Kendall Jenner
When we say ‘high street’, we know you won’t actually find this look hanging up in the Oxford Street branch. Even so we’re happy to see the Kardashian-of-the-moment in this elegant get-up made for her by our good old Toppers.

The award for… Best Old Hollywood Glamour: Blake Lively
Bombshell neckline? Check! Movie star wave? Check! Shimmery Monroe-esque antique pink shade? Check! And for good measure, she’s even gone for a bit of Grecian drama with some drapery on the back of her Gucci gown. It is a ball after all - we say if in doubt, do a Blake and go old school.

The award for… A Ball Gown Doesn’t Have To Be Girly: Hailee Steinfeld
Prabal Gurung’s dress for Hailee proved a big dress can still be modern and slick - it’s all about that clever illusion panel and monochrome palette. We love the sporty neckline too.

The award for…. Best Understatement: Rachel McAdams
We’re going to let Ms McAdams off for ignoring the dress code because her simple Ralph Lauren Collection dress is just SO beautiful and the styling – barely-there blow-dry and minimal jewellery – is perfection.

The award for… Best Accessory: Lily Allen
We love that soft grey and pink stripe on Lily’s Chanel dress. But what we love even more is her jelly bean bag! Are those edible? We like to imagine her dishing them out to her weary fellow celebs after striking their 450th red carpet pose.
