With Jessica Alba already back in her pre-maternity clothes just two weeks after giving birth to baby Haven, it was time for another super-stylish star to step into the yummy mummy-to-be limelight: Beyonce! The “Bootylicious” singer chose last night's celeb-studded MTV Video Music Awards to announce her big news, telling reporters on the red carpet that she had "a surprise" and later ripping open her sequined jacket to reveal an adorable bump following her performance of "Love On Top". With both mum and dad (Jay-Z) as musical icons, the stage seemed like the fitting arena for the baby to put in his or her first appearance!
In other VMA news, Lady Gaga managed to upstage last year's meat dress by arriving clad as her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone, and attempting to kiss Britney Spears on the lips. The pop princess, who scooped Best Pop Video for “Till The World's End” as well as a record-breaking Lifetime Achievement award at the tender age of 29, joked “I’ve already done that”, referring to her saucy smooch with Madonna on stage in 2003.
Meanwhile, a Versace-clad Katy Perry picked up the covetable Video Of The Year gong for “Firework” and the award for Best Collaboration with Kanye West for "ET". Brit songstress Adele did us proud by collecting three awards.
The ceremony, which was hosted by Disney babe Selena Gomez, came to a bittersweet conclusion with Tony Bennett’s poignant homage to the late, great Amy Winehouse. The 85-year-old legend, who recently collaborated with the troubled singer, led a musical tribute that saw singers like Bruno Mars perform some of her greatest hits, including the Mark Ronson-produced “Valerie”.
