‘Don’t Wear Socks With Your Uggs!’: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s Shoes Rules

‘Don’t Wear Socks With Your Uggs!’: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s Shoes Rules

From her ‘clippy-cloppy’ plastic children’s mules to her favourite pair of heels, we caught up with Ugg’s new global ambassador to talk every girl’s favourite subject: SHOES!

What were the first shoes you remember wearing?

My mum would always make me wear Start-Rite Mary Janes. I do remember I had a pair of Dr Marten boots that my granny bought me that were really shiny. Oh! And I had a pair of ‘clippy-cloppy’ shoes as I used to call them. They were plastic high heels that you could put hearts and stars on.

Did you have party shoes as a child?

I grew up in the country and my mum and dad were quite strict about what I could and couldn’t have. My clippy-cloppy shoes were EVERYTHING to me! My mum would tease me about them.

What did your school shoes look like when you were 12?

I think at 12 I probably had a pair of black Kickers. Some of my most stand-out memories are of shoe shopping in August right before you go back to school. It was always major temper tantrum central because my mum would want to put me in something smart and traditional and classic, and I wanted something else.

What would teenage Rosie have worn on her feet?

I actually bought my first pair of Ugg boots when I was 16. I’d just started modelling and they were all the rage; they were everywhere. I’d saved up for a pair from my first few modelling jobs. They were one of the first things I bought with my first pay cheque that I’d earnt myself. I remember I couldn’t wait for them to arrive in the post, and every day I’d come home and check if they’d arrived. I think we can all relate to that thing where you’ve saved up for something - it’s so special. I’ve owned a pair of Ugg boots ever since.

Do you remember your first pair of heels...other than your clippy-cloppy shoes?!

I saved up for a pair from New Look. They had a metal heel and were satin and glittery. I thought they were the bee’s knees!

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

I never know if this sounds bad! I counted and it’s about 70 pairs. I think...I know it was a lot! But I try to keep my wardrobe to a good edit. I’m constantly getting rid of stuff because I don’t like to be overwhelmed. I wouldn’t say I’m a big trends person when it comes to clothes and shoes anyway. I stick to what I like.

What are your fall-back party shoes?

I’m really upset because they’re on their last legs but I have this pair of Giuseppe Zanotti black ankle boots with a big buckle on the side and the tiniest, skinniest stiletto heel. They’re so beautiful. I wear them all the time; they’re cool and sexy and fun all at the same time. I’ll be really upset when I have to get rid of those.

What is it that you love so much about Ugg?

We all love our classic Ugg boots. I wear mine at home in Devon, and they’ve been on ski trips with me. I’m really excited about the new slimmer Ugg. It’s a little softer and more feminine, and I love the wedge. Rella, the new spring style, is really short so you can wear with bare legs, and the shearling inside is thinner so your feet don’t get too hot. I was wearing them at the weekend in LA with little shorts and a T-shirt on the beach.

And finally, are you a socks or no socks person with your Uggs?

No socks! Some people are like, ‘Ew! You don’t wear socks with your Uggs!’ But I think it feels stupid to put socks on. Definitely no socks!
